Editorial Standards
Our promise is simple: accurate, sourced, plainly written economic journalism that always tells you what you can do about it. These are the standards we hold every story to.

1.Our editorial mission
We cover the economy the way it actually reaches Black households, businesses, and communities — income, ownership, credit, capital, contracts, housing, and policy. We write for readers who want to act, not just to be informed.
2.Sourcing
- Every economic figure we publish carries a named source, a date, and a link to the original release.
- We prefer primary sources: Census, BLS, the Federal Reserve, FDIC and NCUA, Grants.gov, SAM.gov, agency filings, and court records.
- When we cite another outlet’s reporting, we name it and link to it.
- We do not publish figures we cannot trace to a source we can show you.
3.Original reporting and rewriting
When a story originates elsewhere, we do not copy it. We report the underlying facts, verify them against primary sources, and write an original explainer in our own voice for our readers, with attribution and a link to the original coverage. Copy-and-paste republication is never acceptable here.
4.The action standard
Every news article and lesson includes an action box: concrete, realistic next steps a reader, business owner, or organizer can take. If a story cannot produce an honest action step, we say so rather than inventing one.
5.Fact-checking and verification
- Numbers are checked against the source document before publication, not against a secondary summary.
- Ownership categories — Black owned, Black founded, Black controlled, Black led — are applied using the definitions on our methodology page and verified before a business is labeled.
- Opportunities are checked for an active deadline and a working official application link; expired items are archived automatically.
- Claims about a named person or business are given a chance to be answered before publication when the claim is adverse.
6.Use of AI
- AI helps us draft, summarize, narrate, and format. A human reviews and is accountable for everything we publish.
- AI is never the sole source of a fact, figure, or quotation.
- Audio narration is machine-generated and labeled as such on the article.
- We do not publish AI-generated images that could be mistaken for photojournalism; illustrative imagery is used as illustration only.
7.Independence and conflicts
Advertisers, sponsors, directory customers, and course buyers receive no editorial favor. Paying for a directory listing does not buy coverage. Any sponsored or paid content is labeled clearly at the top of the page. Staff disclose financial interests in anything they cover and step aside where a conflict exists.
8.Opinion versus reporting
Analysis, commentary, and the Founder’s Learning Desk are labeled as such and are distinct from news reporting. We are openly pro-ownership and pro-community wealth in our mission; that never licenses us to misstate a fact.
9.Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it quickly and say so. Substantive corrections are noted at the bottom of the article with the date and what changed. Minor typos are fixed silently. We do not quietly delete published stories.
Report an error through our contact page using the “Correction request” topic, or through the support chat.
10.Reader privacy in reporting
We protect sources and never publish a reader’s personal information from a tip, support conversation, or account without explicit permission.
