Audit current vendor and purchasing spendReview your organization's last 12 months of vendor payments to see what share already goes to local Black-owned businesses.
Step 2
Build a local business directoryCreate or contribute to a directory of local Black-owned businesses across categories your organization actually buys from.

Partner with your local Black Chamber of CommerceConnect with the chamber for referrals and a vetted list of member businesses ready to bid on your work.

Open procurement opportunities intentionallyBreak large contracts into smaller pieces where possible so smaller local vendors can realistically bid.
Step 5
Set a measurable local-spend targetSet a specific percentage or dollar target for local Black-owned vendor spend for the next fiscal year.

Publicize contract and vendor opportunities earlyShare upcoming procurement needs with the chamber and directory network before they're formally posted.
Step 7
Host a vendor matchmaking eventBring your procurement staff and local business owners into the same room to shorten the path from interest to contract.
Step 8
Track spend and report resultsReport actual dollars spent with local Black-owned businesses against your target at least annually.
Step 9
Offer capacity-building supportPoint vendors toward free SBA/SBDC and MBDA advisors so smaller businesses can meet your contracting requirements.
